Yesterday afternoon we surrendered to the wind. As soon as we came out of the mountains it was blowing forociously in our faces. It felt like we weren't moving. We pulled into the closest campground, where the owners were not there but some long time patrons were looking over things and charged us $5 for a tent site, and opened the rec room for us "in case we wanted to watch some TV. " TV not so much but we did end up sleeping in the rec room to take refuge from the wind and freezing temperatures.
This morning the winds subsided and we were back in the game and made it into an adorable western town, Ennis, for an enormous breakfast (first time we have not been hungry since we can remember). We visited Willies Distillery, Nik bought some resupply for his flask (bourbon is more light weight than beer by abv). We also bought some camping propane at a store where the camping fuel is locked up the guns swing freely. Also, I have yet to enter any establishment (bar, post office, rec room, grocery store that does not have some taxidermy on the walls.
We "puttered" (a verb I learned from Nik that captures how he likes to move through life or at least days of
fun employment) some super quaint historic Montana towns, Virginia City and Nevada City, both old mining towns that now survive on tourism.
We are spending the night in Twin Bridges, another adorably quaint Montana town, although not so touristy. The town seems to survive on trout fishing and ranching. We are staying in our second free self service bike shelter of the trip, sometimes America truly is beautiful.
