Day 42 Boulder to Fort Collins

Day total 50
Trip total 2,297

We woke up this morning in one of the more beautiful corners of the universe.

Nestled into the foothills of the Rockies just ten miles north of Boulder. Last night we stayed with Diana Hemmenway's cousin, Aris, and his wife Suzanne in their beautiful (although slightly flood damaged home). Two years ago a flood significantly damaged what was the then their home (they now live in another beautiful house next door that they used to rent and now live in as they make repairs on their original home). We had the good fortune of staying on the second floor of their original home which is surrounded by window on all side (including gorgeous skylights), that offer majestic view of the Rockies. Both homes are surrounded by diligently kept gardens which Suzanne has meticulously kept for over 35 years. We shared a delicious dinner (and signature cocktails) with them last night. They told us about the devastating flood which actually stranded Suzanne for two days. We shared stories of our travels (our new favorite past time).

This morning Suzanne cooked us a protein rich breakfast of eggs and bacon, bagels and almond butter. She showed us her beautiful gardens and set us on our way to Fort Collins.

This blog could easily have been more appropriately named "Kind Strangers." Again and again we find ourselves taken in by generous people we only tangentially know (if at all) who treat us like family. Aris and Susann were no exception. The kindness they (and so many others) showed us has become as much a part of the landscape of this trip as the roads we travel over each day.

Tonight is our last night in Colorado:(  Nik and I have many feelings about leaving the state that has taken us the most. Many schemes of how to make this state a more permanent home have begun...

  1. I just caught up on your blog and I feel so much joy for both of you! What an amazing adventure filled with such spectacular little moments and daily presence. This post makes me think a lot about the power of place. Traveling allows you little windows into other worlds that you get to peer into and see how you it feels. I am glad you are getting the chance to see and be in so many places and I'm also glad that you are feeling the pull of places and listening to what you feel. It makes me so excited for the rest of your journey together, both on bikes and in life. Xoxo- Jill

  2. Schemes to make Colorado a more permanent home, eh? I just happen to know a guy who is about to start work at a certain local brewery there. So...you know...connections.
