At this point we only count our biking miles when our bikes are loaded with gear, by that criteria today was a zero miles day, and my butt appreciated that very much.
We switched it up and went paddling (instead of pedaling) on Jackson Lake right up under the Tetons with our new friends, Megan and Robert. We met them serendipitously this morning as we were setting up camp in the "hiker biker section" that the park has reserved for those on bikes and hikers at a reduced rate ($11 per person). They started in San Francisco (where they live now) and are headed to Denver (where they grew up). So they are headed south and we are headed north but for this fortuitous day our paths intercepted. We rented kayaks together on the lake and had an epic picnic. We shared travel stories and whiskey. Nik and I finished our lazy day with some more swimming and a quick hike around the lake before heading back to our campsite where Nik made an awesome camp fire with the drift wood he collected.
Maybe it was all the sun I soaked up on our lazy lake day but I am warming up to this whole national park thing for a few reasons;
-The fact that the parks reserve spots for hikers and bikers at a reduced cost
-A program I found out about called Every Kid in a Park where the parks provide free admission to every fourth grader this school year (the program will launch this september).
-The well cared for natural beauty I am constantly surrounded by here
