Day 35: Saxon Hut to Heaphy Hut

 Ah, good morning!
 Good bye, tent platform.
 New terrain at McKay Hut.

You can just barely see the mouth of the Heaphy River, and our goal for the evening.

 Quick rest.
Laugh now guys, but we'll learn soon that shorts at not the best thing to wear when you get the Heaphy River.

Lewis Hut.  And a Weka bird.
They're cheeky ground dwelling birds.  Not shy, not scared of humans.  Will hop on your backpack if you set it down for a few minutes.  A bit of a pest, but cute in it's own way.

The longest suspension bridge on the trek.

And at the river, the largest tree we saw, too.

The terrain changes again to almost tropical jungle.

So it's lovely here at Heaphy, but the sand flies are terrible.  You can't stand still for more than 10 seconds before they find you, so it's very hard to really appreciate.
But I did discover that if I line up my camera with they eyepiece of the tiny binoculars that I brought, you can take some interesting zoom pictures.

You can see the hut in the background of this next picture.
 The beach at Heaphy.

 Sunset.

Our campground.  The fire helped with the bugs.

As you can see, the flies got pretty thick on the outside of the netting of our tent.
Interestingly enough, the fire was close enough that they only gathered on the far side of the tent.

We expect it to rain tomorrow, so we went to bed early and tried to get as much sleep as our itchy ankles would allow.
