Day 12: Sunnyside to Portland

And onward with the journey.  We left Sunnyside, with dreams of cloudy, overcast Portland in our head.  First, obligatory family photo:
Aren't we cute?  The facial hair actually makes us look more alike than we have in a while.
We drove south through Washington towards the Columbia River.  In Maryhill, on a ledge overlooking the river, is a full size replica of Stonehenge, dedicated as a World War I memorial.
The view looking west from the memorial.  The Columbia is not a small river.
In the midst of the concrete "stones" of the memorial.  It is pretty interesting, and there is a very palpable sense that the stones were set up they way they were to create very specific sight lines.

Hey, remember that time Molly and I went biking across the country, and there was a lot of smoke?  Well, this is one of the many reasons why.  The closer, darker hill was a burn site, hence the darker color.  No trees, but dry wheat straw burns pretty easily, if you can believe it.
Another shot of the ways the hills burnt, or didn't burn.

And then we drove west.  And it started raining, and raining some more.  It seems that all of the rain the west didn't get this summer while Molly and I were biking is now coming down as quickly as possible.

But we survived the down pours and driving on rather poorly drained freeways, and made it to our home rental in Portland.  The first order of business in Portland?  A beer, of course.
Hooray for the Bridgeport brewery, which had rather fine beer, and pretty good pizza, too.

We also stopped at Fathead Brewing, which had good enough beer, but a very strange logo, and a bit of a TGIFridays meets brewpub feel.  Plus loud music playing on the speakers hung over every table.  I never get why any restaurant or bar would play music that loudly when you are already packed, but it made for not a pleasant experience.

More Portland in the days to come...
