We were staying in a fairly new, trying a bit too hard to be hip, hotel in Surrey Hills, a neighborhood in central-ish Sydney. Molly and I started the day by going for a run through the Botanical Gardens, around the Opera House, across the Harbor Bridge, and then back again. Running tourism always gives you a good quick picture of a place, before setting down to see the details.
We then wandered around our local neighborhood.
The name of a clothing boutique:
I think the Aussies may have a Texas-thing, but I couldn't find any hard proof or get anyone to admit to it, though. But there were several Texas-themed bars and restaurants in Brisbane, this boutique, lots of western wear (not all of it functional) and a strong trucks/hats/boots vibe, even in the heart of the bigger cities. We did love the typical Sydney townhome, though. Two stories, lots of wrought iron, sometimes attic rooms with windows. Usually opening to a courtyard in the back. Terra Cotta or corrugated metal roofs. Very very charming.
Lastly, although I didn't get any pictures, we wandered through a fashion clothing area, but one that only sold wholesale to retailers. It was strange to see storefronts with dressed mannequins, and full of clothing, but that you couldn't just walk into a buy from. I couldn't imagine how the economics of that would work, either. Storefronts are expensive, compared to warehouses. And there were lots of them in a single area. So there was enough of a market for retailers to constantly visit Sydney to go to these stores, but not enough to drive up rents and drive out some of the smaller outfits.
